RHYTHM & RESONANCE is an advanced-beginner+ contemporary vinyasa that encourages breath coherence rhythm and resonance through intermittent closed-loop breathing sessions. Students are practiced at safely and independently self-guiding pose modifications without teacher guidance.
Throughout our active vinyasa on the mat, we pause a few minutes in a static pose such as wide leg child or downward dog for a closed-loop breathing cycle being a 6-count inhale and 6-count exhale. We extend this breathing cycle fully to the later half of class for seated and supine poses until savasana. This breathing technique creates multiple health and neuroscience benefits within body~brain physiology.
Notably, it encourages a sine wave pattern by utilizing a slow, rhythmic and continuous diaphragmatic breath, typically at a rate of 5–6 breaths per minute. By eliminating pauses between inhalation and exhalation, and ensuring both are of equal length (roughly 5.5 seconds), the diaphragm moves in a pendulum-like, flowing motion that mimics a smooth wave. This specific rhythm matches the body’s own cardiovascular system. It promotes a state of coherence (maximum HRV) where the cardiovascular system enters a resonant state by synchronizing the body's major cardiovascular and respiratory rhythms—specifically heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing—into a harmonious, low-frequency resonant oscillation (roughly 0.1 Hz).
Susan recommends students have two blocks, a strap and blanket near the mat in home studios
